English, ICT and ABP: Keys to comprehensive learning in rehabilitation

During the year 2023, the development of the English subject at the Colombian School of Rehabilitation University Institution aimed to strengthen the oral and written communicative skills of students according to the specific needs of each program.


Students made written presentations on topics related to their disciplinary field, as well as oral presentations supported by slides, videos, and other multimedia resources. The use of ICT was promoted not only for presentations but also for online collaborative activities, virtual workshops, and access to authentic material in English.

 

The ABP methodology was implemented for the development of transversal projects in which students put the four communication skills into practice by exploring real problems of their profession and proposing viable solutions. Some examples are educational campaigns on healthy habits, design of therapeutic intervention protocols and analysis of the effectiveness of rehabilitation approaches.

Likewise, activities related to consultation and research were carried out with institutions, related companies, and experts, where students learned first-hand about situations that they later had to present in English, applying the acquired vocabulary. As a closing event, an academic exhibition was held in which future physiotherapists, speech therapists and occupational therapists presented fictitious cases related to their professional work in English.

 

Looking ahead to 2024, it is expected to increase individual and collaborative participation in these dynamics, as well as link international references through videoconferences to promote globalized learning. The goal is for students to complete the subject with an Intermediate High level of English.
