The significance of learning a foreign language in any country provides a vast number of benefits for its population, in our particular context, learning English becomes essential to thrive in an increasingly interconnected and competitive world due to several reasons.
To start with, English is the most widely spoken language across the globe, it serves the purpose for international communication, diplomacy and academia as well as business, offering open doors for economic opportunities not just in different countries but within Colombia. Many multinational companies have established their operations inside our country and thereby, requiring professionals with English proficiency. This has become one contributing factor for employability.
Subsequently, English is the primary language for knowledge construction. A wealth of resources in diverse disciplines are written in this also called “international language”, including academic articles, books and even worldwide universities impart instruction in this language, enabling English speakers a wide range of academic options and access to education, scholarships, exchange programs and participation in abroad research projects, fostering connection and collaboration with people from different countries and cultures.
In addition to this, the duties of professionals in the 21st century demand digital integration with new technologies; they are expected to work actively with them to enhance processes in their field and English as a foreign language plays an important role (not to say a dominant one) as most or even pretty much technology's breakthrough are developed first in this “international language” being this, another reason to learn it.
And last, but not least, personal growth of English speakers empowers them to boost their self-confidence to prove themselves in diverse contexts as they can express effectively, engaging them in meaningful conversations and participating in global issues which is crucial for professionals in our society.
Consequently, the ECR has implemented the strategy of assuming the teaching of English in each academic program, aiming students to take ownership in the learning of this foreign language and acquire as well as equip them with valuable skills to deliver healthcare professionals which can adapt easily to this, fast-paced world we live in.
